Singapore coffee championship: what to expect

Singapore coffee is about to get very serious indeed, as 67 baristas line up at Sands Expo this July to prove their craft is worth a place on the world stage.

What the Singapore coffee championship actually is

The Singapore National Coffee Championship (SNCC) returns from 15 to 17 July 2026, bringing together the nation’s leading baristas and coffee professionals in a showcase of skill, creativity, and craftsmanship. Established in the 1950s, the Singapore Coffee Association (SCA) is the official trade body representing the country’s coffee industry, with members spanning coffee traders, roasters, cafe owners, equipment suppliers, and baristas.

The championship is held at Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Level 1 Halls A, B and C. It is co-located with SIGEP Asia, the third Asian edition of the world’s leading Italian artisan gelato, pastry, bakery, and coffee trade show, alongside Specialty Food and Drinks Asia and Restaurant Asia. Think of it as the most caffeinated weekend Marina Bay Sands has ever seen.

SNCC continues to serve as Singapore’s premier competitive benchmark for excellence across the coffee and cafe industry, anchored in the highest standards of specialty coffee. More than a showcase, the championship plays a critical role in setting professional standards, elevating the barista profession, and promoting best practices in coffee preparation.

The 4 competition categories explained

SNCC runs across 4 national championship categories, each testing a distinct aspect of coffee craft. The winner of each category earns the right to represent Singapore at the World Coffee Championships 2027.

The Singapore National Barista Championship asks competitors to prepare a series of espresso-based beverages under time pressure, demonstrating technical precision and creative beverage development. The Singapore National Brewers Cup focuses on filtered coffee prepared by hand, testing manual brewing technique and service excellence.

The Singapore National Latte Art Championship challenges competitors to use advanced milk-pouring techniques to craft intricate latte art designs, with judging criteria covering symmetry, contrast, creativity, and overall visual presentation. The Singapore Cup Tasters Championship is a fast-paced test of palate accuracy and sensory skill that challenges competitors to identify subtle flavour differences across specialty coffees. For anyone who has ever argued over which single-origin tastes of blueberry, this is the category to watch.

The competitors: returning champions and fresh faces

This year, 67 competitors will compete across 4 core categories. Returning champions set to raise the stakes include 2024 TIMEMORE Singapore National Brewers Cup winner Elysia Tan, Singapore National Latte Art Championship 2025 champion Lee Yip Choon, and back-to-back 2024 and 2025 Singapore Cup Tasters Championship champion Tan Yi Xin.

At the same time, more first-time competitors are stepping forward to test themselves against returning champions and experienced professionals. The rising participation reflects a maturing and increasingly competitive coffee scene in Singapore, with a growing pool of talent pursuing coffee as a professional craft while actively benchmarking against international standards.

For spectators, the event offers a rare, close look at what separates a good cup from a championship-level one. The field of 67 is not just a number. It is a signal that specialty coffee in Singapore is no longer a niche pursuit.

Expert perspective on Singapore coffee culture

Singapore’s specialty coffee scene has moved well beyond a trend. What we see at competitions like the SNCC is a genuine professional community, one where baristas treat sourcing, extraction, and sensory development as a serious discipline. The competition format creates accountability. Competitors must perform consistently under pressure, in front of judges, in real time. That pressure produces better professionals. The growing number of first-time entrants each year tells us that younger people in Singapore now see a career in specialty coffee as both credible and rewarding. The international pathway that the championship provides, through the World Coffee Championships, also gives local talent something concrete to train toward.

What the championship means for Singapore’s coffee scene

SNCC is described as an important platform where craft meets commerce, enabling meaningful industry connections and strengthening Singapore’s position as a regional hub for the coffee and cafe sector. The event draws not only competitors but also brands, buyers, and enthusiasts from across the region.

Visitors can expect a dynamic lineup of live competition showcases featuring some of Singapore’s top coffee professionals. From precision brewing and espresso preparation to latte art and sensory tasting challenges, audiences get a close view of baristas demonstrating exceptional technical skill, creativity, and craftsmanship in real time.

Beyond the competitions, SNCC also reflects the continued growth and vibrancy of Singapore’s specialty coffee community, bringing together industry professionals, cafes, and coffee enthusiasts over a shared passion for the craft.

How to attend and what to expect on the day

SIGEP Asia 2026 takes place from 15 to 17 July 2026, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm daily. The event is held at Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Marina Bay Sands, Halls A, B and C, Level 1, Singapore. Admission is free for qualified trade professionals who register before attending.

In addition to the competition arenas, the multi-day event features interactive trade exhibitions, educational workshops, and networking zones designed to foster collaboration between international green bean suppliers, equipment manufacturers, and local cafe entrepreneurs. Even if you attend without a strong background in specialty coffee, the live format is easy to follow and genuinely absorbing.

Key strategic partners include GFS Everpure as the official water filtration partner, CP Meiji as the official dairy milk partner, and Pastry World as the official pastry partner, among others.

Why the Singapore coffee championship matters this year

The Singapore coffee scene has earned its reputation through consistency, creativity, and a genuine respect for the craft. This year’s championship distills all of that into 3 focused days of competition at one of the city’s most accessible venues.

As with previous editions, each national champion will go on to represent Singapore at the World Coffee Championships 2027, competing alongside top coffee talent from around the world. The stakes are real. A title at the Singapore coffee championship is not simply a local achievement. It is a direct ticket to a global stage.

If you care about what goes into your cup, or simply want to experience Singapore coffee culture at its most precise and passionate, this is the event to add to your July calendar. Register, show up, and let the baristas do the rest.
