Holiday reservations: book the best table

A practical timeline for booking Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's tables before they vanish

You want solid holiday reservations for Thanksgiving dinner or a Christmas prix fixe at the restaurant you actually chose, not whatever seat remains two weeks out. Holiday reservations open and close faster than a normal weekday booking, often a month or more before you start looking. The platform matters too: Resy absorbed Tock in 2026, and release times still differ restaurant by restaurant. This guide covers when holiday menus actually open, which platform controls your favorite restaurant, what trips up first time bookers, and how prices compare once you sit down.

When holiday reservations actually open

Fine dining restaurants claim their holiday dates long before casual spots do. Fine dining restaurants require booking 4-6 weeks in advance, while casual chains need 2-3 weeks notice. That gap matters. If you wait until two weeks before Thanksgiving, the best fine dining slots are already gone.

Stubborn Seed, the Michelin starred restaurant in Las Vegas, shows how early this window opens. Holiday reservations open in October for December dining, and the restaurant recommends booking 30-60 days in advance to secure your preferred dates. A restaurant does not wait for the season to start before it fills its calendar.

Theme park dining runs on its own clock. Guests can make a dining reservation at most Disney World restaurants and Disneyland restaurants up to 60 days in advance of their meal. Holiday specific slots follow their own schedule on top of that window: holiday-themed character dining reservations open Oct. 1, 2026, and the holiday parade dining reservations open Oct. 8, 2026. If a holiday meal sits inside a theme park, mark that date separately from your restaurant list.

Which platform controls the table you want

Two systems now handle almost every notable holiday reservation: Resy and Tock. On February 24, 2026, American Express announced that Tock would merge into Resy, with the combined platform operating under the Resy brand. Since August 11, 2026, Resy lists Tock's restaurants, wineries and experiences, for over 25,000 venues in total. If your favorite restaurant used Tock last year, check the restaurant's current booking link rather than assuming that ownership makes listings interchangeable with Resy.

Release times still vary restaurant by restaurant, not by platform. Carbone opens reservations at 10:00 AM Eastern time about 30 days ahead, Balthazar opens at midnight roughly 30 days out, and Lilia opens at 10:00 AM around 27 days ahead. The only way to learn your restaurant's pattern is to ask directly. Call the restaurant and simply ask the host when they release new reservations; most staff will tell you the exact time and window.

Tock restaurants behave differently again. Unlike Resy, where tables open on a rolling daily basis, many Tock venues release tickets in batches on one specific day and time each month, a pattern worth confirming before you set an alarm. On Resy itself, the free Notify feature lets you request a date, time range and party size for a restaurant. Use it across your whole holiday window, since setting notifications for every date in your window works better than watching just your first choice.

What people get wrong about holiday booking

A blank OpenTable calendar does not mean a restaurant is full for the holidays. If a restaurant is not showing space there, check Resy and Tock first, then try the restaurant's own website for direct booking. Many independent kitchens never listed on OpenTable at all, so an empty calendar there tells you nothing about Resy or Tock.

Diners who booked holiday meals through Tock in past years should expect some friction this season. American Express bought Tock from Squarespace for $400 million in 2024, and in February 2026 announced it was folding Tock into sister platform Resy, with the consumer facing Tock app and website sunsetting in summer 2026 while the restaurant facing software keeps operating under Resy branding. If you booked through Tock before, follow that restaurant's current booking link instead of searching for the old app.

A deposit does not work like a normal hold. Upscale Thanksgiving and holiday menus commonly require a deposit of usually $50-100 per person, and prepaid models change the stakes further: "Tock's prepaid model reduces no-shows, but also locks you in." Read the cancellation window before you pay, since it rarely matches a standard reservation's flexibility.

Comparing holiday menu formats and prices

Holiday menus generally come in three formats, and each one trades price against flexibility. At Chardon in Houston, the French bistro's Thanksgiving dinner runs a $75 three-course prix fixe on Thursday, November 26, with a three-wine pairing available for $35 more. At Prime 131, Ben Berg's live-fire steakhouse puts holiday classics alongside creative sushi and wood-fired specialties for a $95 prix fixe before tax and gratuity.

Groups that want to skip the dining room entirely have another option. Hungry's $245 family feast serves up to 10 people with oven-roasted turkey, cornbread stuffing, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole and a seasonal pie, and orders need to go in at least 24 hours ahead. For a party of eight or more, that math often beats a sit down prix fixe per person.

Restaurants favor the prix fixe format for a practical reason beyond tradition. A fixed menu lifts per cover revenue by 15 to 30 percent, speeds up table turns, and simplifies kitchen operations on volume days. Thanksgiving service alone can generate two to three times a typical Sunday's revenue, thanks to larger parties and higher check averages.

What this means for your holiday reservations

Start with the single meal that matters most. Decide on your most important holiday meal before booking morning, then go straight for that restaurant the moment availability opens. Everything else on your list can wait a few extra minutes.

Call ahead and ask the host directly when new reservations release, since most staff will give you the exact time and window. Set alerts across your whole date range rather than a single night, confirm your deposit and cancellation terms in writing, and check the restaurant's current booking link if you last used Tock. A reservation built this way rarely falls apart in December.
