Coffee roasters London: the best indie picks

Coffee roasters in London form one of the most exciting independent food scenes this city has ever produced, and as a born-and-bred Londoner, I find it as thrilling as any gallery opening or music venue.

Why London’s independent roasters matter

The specialty coffee movement treats coffee as an artisanal product, similar to wine or craft beer, with a focus on single-origin sourcing, lighter roast profiles, transparent supply chains, and precise brewing. London sits at the centre of this movement in the UK.

London has the most coffee roasters in the UK, and it is home to some of the country’s most famous names, including Assembly Coffee Roasters and Square Mile. That concentration of talent means the standard here is genuinely world-class.

The term “independent coffee roaster” has, over recent years, become a stamp of quality in the coffee world. When you buy from an independent, you almost always get a better product and a more transparent supply chain than you find on a supermarket shelf.

The roasters that built the scene

Monmouth Coffee Company, founded in 1978 on Monmouth Street in Covent Garden, is widely recognised as London’s oldest specialty coffee roaster, and the business predated the modern specialty movement by decades while remaining one of the best roasters in the city nearly 50 years later.

London’s third-wave movement began with Monmouth Coffee in 1978 and accelerated in the 2000s with Square Mile and Climpson and Sons. These names gave the city its identity as a serious specialty destination.

Square Mile Coffee Roasters, founded in 2008 by Anette Moldvaer and James Hoffmann, has grown into a respected team dedicated to careful sourcing and high-standard roasting, closely tied to London’s coffee scene and focused on raising industry benchmarks across the supply chain. You can visit their roastery in Walthamstow and watch the work in progress.

East London: the spiritual home of specialty

Shoreditch, Hackney, and Dalston form the spiritual home of London specialty coffee, with roasters including Allpress, Dark Arts, Origin, Climpson and Sons, and Ozone all operating in this area. These neighbourhoods reward a Saturday morning walk between cups.

Climpson and Sons has been on Hackney’s Broadway Market since 2002, with B Corp certification and the kind of neighbourhood standing that takes 2 decades to build. Their roastery sits under the railway arches near London Fields, and the cafe on Broadway Market remains one of Hackney’s busiest weekend spots, with a rotating seasonal espresso blend that is medium roast, balanced, and designed to work with or without milk.

Allpress, founded in New Zealand, uses custom-built hot air roasters shipped from New Zealand, sources only specialty-grade arabica scoring 83 or above on the SCA scale, and operates from a restored 1895 joinery factory in Dalston. The space is beautiful, and the coffee matches it.

Expert perspective on London’s specialty coffee culture

London’s independent coffee roasters have done something rare: they have built a culture of sourcing that genuinely changes how farmers work and how consumers think. The focus on direct trade is not a marketing phrase here. These roasters visit farms, build long-term relationships, and pay above-market prices because quality and ethics are inseparable. What makes London distinctive is the density of serious operators. You can walk from Hackney to Bermondsey and taste 5 completely different roasting philosophies in a single afternoon. That range drives up the standard across the whole city. For anyone who works in this industry, London remains one of the most important cities in the world to watch.

South London and beyond: new roastery destinations

Brixton is community-oriented, with Assembly Coffee based in a converted fire station and Volcano Coffee operating from a railway arch. Both roasters bring real character to South London’s growing coffee identity.

One notable roaster in the wider London network won Best Specialty Coffee Roaster in Europe and the Overall Winner award at the 2025 Global Coffee Awards, as well as Most Sustainable Brand at the European Coffee and Hospitality Awards, and is known for direct trade and sustainability leadership. These accolades show how seriously London’s roasters compete at the global level.

Caravan Coffee Roasters opened on Exmouth Market in 2010 and now runs 7 London sites plus an outlet in Manchester, having largely defined the hybrid roastery and all-day dining format that other operators now copy. Their King’s Cross roastery is a strong starting point for newcomers to the scene.

How to explore London’s roastery map

The geography of London’s roasteries clusters around 4 areas: Bermondsey for railway arch roasteries, Hackney and Dalston for the cafe-forward operations, the City fringes around Shoreditch and Old Street for the larger names, and pockets of West London in Ealing and Chiswick for newer arrivals.

For in-person browsing, Borough Market for Monmouth, Broadway Market for Climpson and Sons, and Shoreditch for Allpress, Origin, and Dark Arts offer the highest concentration of options. The London Coffee Festival, held annually, is the single best opportunity to taste from dozens of roasters in one visit.

Most London roasters ship across the UK, and many ship internationally. Square Mile, Dark Arts, Kiss the Hippo, and Workshop Coffee all offer online ordering with home delivery. So even if you cannot visit in person, the beans can still reach you.

The coffee roasters London deserves

London’s independent coffee roasters are as much a part of this city’s identity as its music venues and art spaces. This guide has shown that coffee roasters in this city cover every style, neighbourhood, and sourcing philosophy you could want. Specialty coffee is the fastest-growing segment of the UK market, driven by consumer demand for unique flavours and quality. That growth means more roasters, more cafes, and more chances to find your perfect cup. Visit a roastery, talk to the people behind the counter, and let London’s independent coffee scene surprise you. The coffee roasters here are ready for you.
